Less Toxic Clothing

Did you know you are probably covered in toxic, plastic clothing right now? Kind of scary and gross and surprising?

I have been on a wellness JOURNEY since the beginning of 2022 when I launched my wellness journaling and planning online course. (Click HERE to join! For 50% off through 4/29/23 use code: gethealthy50) I have been learning so much about healthier foods, removing environmental toxins, and more! The clothing I wear had not even crossed my mind until I was scrolling Instagram one day…

The Problem

I came across a post from a lady named Fallon who I follow. Her Instagram account is @fallondanae. She posted, “Why would I stop using plastic and synthetics in my kitchen and home but continue to put them on my body? The transition is a slow one, but my body can feel the difference. I almost crave organic and natural clothing.”

I started researching the textile industry, and I could not believe what I found.

The goal? Stay away from synthetic fabrics such as:

  • acrylic
  • polyester
  • recycled polyester
  • rayon aka viscose
  • acetate
  • modal
  • nylon
  • bamboo isn’t good, either!

These “fabrics” leech plastics into your skin. When heated, it is even worse. Think about how you should not put plastic Tupperware into the microwave. Similar philosophy with these synthetic fabrics. When you wear them to work out, your body gets warm, creating more opportunity for heat to leech bad things into your skin. Skin is the largest organ in the body and the biggest one, too. Think of all the surface area of your skin! Plus, clothing is in the most intimate parts of your body. Also, when you wash and put these clothing items in the dryer you are also heating them up. I had never realized the impact clothing has on our health!

Mate the Label is a company that makes some organic cotton clothing. On their Instagram account they have been sharing with people more about the problems with toxic clothing. Click HERE to follow them and learn more.

The Solution

What should you look for instead? Look for natural fibers, things God made! If God made it, then it is good! Check out organic cotton, linen (made from flax), and hemp. Another thing to think about is dyes used on fabric. Look for natural colored clothing, or things dyed using natural ingredients. Also beware of bright white that could have been bleached. Natural cotton is slightly off-white.

There are a few certifications that are helpful and healthy. GOTS Certified Organic Cotton is a good one to look for. OEKO-TEK Certified is another great thing to look for as you are shopping.

I have been seeing more about a fabric called “tencel” that seems better than polyester but not as good as organic cotton or linen. I am not going to be personally purchasing tencel/lyocell items and instead investing in linen or organic cotton.

I was listening to the lady who made the Switch Natural app talk about bamboo clothing. Although it is often labeled as a more eco friendly option, she was saying the standards in the industry for bamboo are confusing and not consistent, making it not a reliable and healthy source for textiles.

Here are some of my favorites and some other brands I have been looking at, too! I hope and pray these give you some ideas and inspiration. Remember to ALWAYS look at the fabric. Not all the items from the brands I mention below are 100% organic cotton. Also, recycled polyester has been floating around and featured and used in some of these companies. Be sure to read labels and inform yourself!

Brands to Check Out

Less toxic clothing items I own and love:

More less toxic clothing I ordered & thoughts:

Pansy:

  • Leggings (XL): LOVE these! Thicker cotton and very comfy. My favorite leggings I have ordered from all the companies I have tried so far (Fair Indigo, Pact, Mate).
  • Stretch shorts (XL): LOVE these! Thicker cotton and very comfy, perfect for wearing under dresses or as pajamas. These would be good for working out in my home since they are a little on the shorter side.
  • Full bra (XXL): Not a good option if you get cold, rather thin, need to handwash, size fits me well. I typically wear a 36DDD in traditional bras. I don’t plan to order another one of these bras, though.
  • High rise Undies (XL): Thicker cotton, elastic around leg holes is a little tight, hit me a little below the belly button. Don’t plan to order again.
  • Short Socks (size 7-9): Thick and comfy! I wear shoe size 7-8 and these fit well.

Knickey:

  • Tank bra (XXL): My favorite! Love the adjustable straps, two layers of cotton making it thicker
  • Scoop bra (XXL): Two layers of cotton makes it thicker, but like the straps more on the tank bra better than this one
  • High rise briefs (XL and XXL): VERY high rise, too high for me, XL fits me perfect, so I plan to order that size in future undies I order from Knickey.
  • Mid-rise hipster (XXL): Hit at my belly button, which I like, more coverage on the bottom than the briefs which I prefer. I will order an XL instead of XXL next time. I really like these undies. My favorites of all the organic cotton undies I have tried.
  • Quarter Socks (S/M): LOVE these! Thin and not too high make it the perfect everyday sock. I wear shoe size 7-8 and the S/M were slightly big on me.
  • The Easy Tank (L): I LOVE this tank top. It is too cropped to wear as a layering tank top like I hoped, but I wear it with a pair of high waisted linen pants, and it looks super cute. It also makes a great pajama shirt or workout top.

Mate the Label:

  • Organic Stretch sports bra (1X): Two layers of fabric makes it a little thicker, super comfy for working out or running errands. I would order another one.
  • Organic Stretch Midi-leggings (1X): I am 5 foot 3 inches tall and these “midi” leggings come down to my ankles. The regular length leggings would be very long on me I assume. These are SUPER comfy. I will definitely order another pair.
  • Organic stretch biker short (1X): Really like these for working out or hanging out around the house. They are a bit longer on me, hitting right above the knee, so a bit too long to wear under shorter dresses.
  • Organic Terry classic jogger (1X): Long on me, but extremely comfortable. Since they are joggers, it is okay they are a bit long. Not sure I would order another pair in this exact style, but I am glad I have them.
  • Organic Cotton layering tank (XL): This is too big on me and is more flowy than I wanted for a layering tank. I plan to use it for working out and sleeping, but I wouldn’t order again.
  • Note: 1X is actually different than XL I realized. It’s a little bigger than XL.

Pact:

  • PureActive pocket biker short (XL): Fit perfect and are great for working out, hanging out at home or running errands in the summer.
  • Fisherman turtleneck tunic sweater (XL): WAY way too large on me. Washed and dried on the “sanitize” setting, and it did shrink quite a bit. I will wear it now, but really disappointed it was quite so big.
  • Ease sleep short (XL): LOVE these! Perfect for sleeping or lounging around the house. I could probably have fit in a large.
  • Purefit bootcut legging 26” inseam (XL): Wasn’t sure how I would like the bootcut style, but it is okay. I would like to try a skinny legging style from them next, but I do like these.
  • Shelf bra camisole 3 pack (XL): LOVE these so much! Wear them every single day, and I will be ordering another set to have.
  • Tissue Slub Femme Ruffle Tee (XL): The shirt is super cute and fun. The arm pit holes seem to stretch out a bit as I wear them.
  • Women’s Black Purefit Legging (XL): Super long on me, wish they were a petite or shorter version. I wear them cuffed. The threads have started to come undone a bit. Don’t plan to order these again.

Quince: Email hillary@creativefaithco.com and I’ll send you a referral link for $20 off your first purchase of $50 or more!

  • 100% Organic Cotton Gauze Long Sleeve Shirt (L): LOVE this! Fits perfectly. My favorite item I have ordered from them.
  • 100% Organic Cotton Gauze Peasant Blouse (L): Also love this shirt. Perfect for work or date night. Can wear with leggings or tucked into jeans.
  • 100% Organic Cotton Fisherman Crew Sweater (L): My husband loved this one on me. The arms are slightly snug, but I know they will stretch out.
  • 100% Organic Cotton Boyfriend Crew (L): My favorite sweater from them. The arms are slightly long, but look cute cuffed.
  • 100% European Linen Short Sleeve Shirt (L): Like this shirt. Good for date night or for work. A bit shorter in length than I am used to.
  • Organic Heavyweight Fleece Boyfriend Crew (L): Fits snug. Might order an extra-large, too, for a bigger more oversized look.
  • Linen tank top: Returned this one, size large was tight in the tummy area but large in the arm pit area

Other clothing brands I have been looking at and checking out:
