]]>While “Joy to the World” is a great Christmas song, Isaac Watts did not pen this hymn with that purpose. This song was based off Psalm 98:4.
“Shout for joy to the Lord, all the earth, burst into jubilant song with music.”
Watts was not pleased with the music found in churches in the 1800s. He thought it was boring. According to this website, the father of the hymnist issued a challenge to create a worship song that was more to his liking, and “Joy to the World” was born.
This song focuses on the second coming of Jesus. The first line reads: “Joy to the world, the Lord is come.” Is is present tense, not the past tense has like we sometimes confusingly say.
